A local county councillor has contributed towards the start-up costs of a group that will provide young people in the Stevenage area with new skills and qualifications.

County Councillor Robin Parker (Chells) has allocated £1,000 from his locality budget allowance to Stevenage Turn the Tide.

Explained Cllr Parker:

This not-for-profit organisation helps young people, aged 12 to 19, who may have been experiencing difficulties in mainstream education by providing them with building and sailing skills and qualifications, with the opportunity of gaining an apprenticeship.

I’m more than happy to play a part in helping local young people achieve their full potential.

Locality budgets were launched in July 2009, with funding to be used for worthy social, economic or environmental causes in Hertfordshire. A total of £10,000 is available to each of the 77 members of Hertfordshire County Council to spend on worthwhile community projects in their area.
