The behaviour of Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World has shocked the nation.
Allegations that the paper hacked the phones of 9/11 victims, of killed soldier’s families and of murder victims like Milly Dowler are simply sickening. Cash bribes to the police are simply corrupt.
Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats are leading the charge to ensure that the people that committed these crimes are brought to justice. But things mustn’t stop there.
The Lib Dems have backed the formation of a full independent public inquiry into the hacking affair. The public deserves the truth about the behaviour of News International, the police and politicians in this sad affair. The inquiry will also look into the state of the press in Britain today.
Lib Dem Deputy Leader Simon Hughes said:
Journalism in the UK used to have the reputation as the best in the world. It is in the interests of all the public that this reputation is now restored.
Labour & Conservatives left red faced
The Murdoch media empire has wielded huge power and influence in our country. For more than a decade, the Lib Dems have been a lone voice in British politics speaking out against Murdoch.
At the same time Labour and Conservative politicians have fallen over backwards to keep Rupert Murdoch and his cronies happy.
They’ve become so close that Gordon Brown and David Cameron even attended Rebekah Brooks’ wedding!
Leading Lib Dems Nick Clegg and Vince Cable are demanding a major shake up of the British media.
Stevenage campaigner Tim Neale said:
Again and again senior Murdoch executives have met serious charges with evasion.
Why should we be surprised? Successive Prime Ministers have spinelessly courted Murdock’s support.
A culture of impunity developed in parts of the Murdock empire where his employees believed his political influence put them above the law.
This has to end.
