Opposition Liberal Democrat councillors on Hertfordshire County Council have demanded that the Conservative run authority review its current gully cleaning programme and performance of Ringway is main highways contractor after hundreds of rods and footways became flooding in the
last few days.
Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst, Liberal Democrat Leader (Central Watford and Oxhey) said, “I can make a distinction between flash flooding where ultimately you are always going to get a problem and recurrent issues where clearly there is a gully problem. I raised months again with the Cabinet Member (Terry Douris) that I did not think the gully cleaning programme – that ensures that the drains are kept clear- was working sufficiently well to allow water to drain away. At the time I was told that current plans laid down by the Tories only allows the main contractor ( Ringway) to clean gullies once every 18 month unless it is vulnerable gullies and they are then 6 months.”.
” Unfortunately as we all now know this is just not good enough” said Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst.
Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst wrote to Cllr Douris Monday morning demanding an urgent review of the programme and their capacity of Ringway to deal with faults. The later point arose as it came to light that Ringway were claiming to have fixed flooding which they had not.
“My colleagues and I across the county have highlighted faults with reported flooding, some affecting properties and some on main roads which the contractor to did not deal with. Indeed answers came back about the flooding on the A405 as ‘Thank you for your report. We have inspected this location. Any repairs required have now been carried out. No further action is planned at the present time.’ Yet the road is still flooded,” said Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst. ” I and residents will not be fobbed off and put up with this dreadful service any longer- changes have to be made.”
