Letter from Chells County Councillor Robin Parker as published in the Comet
Your correspondent Jacqui Fallowes (Comet letters, 8 December) shoots herself in the foot magnificently several times. She rightly complains about pot holed roads, broken pavements and damaged street lights whilst extolling the virtues of the Conservatives. Clearly she does not know that all these things are the responsibility of the Conservative dominated Hertfordshire County Council (HCC)!
As the main opposition group at HCC, the Liberal Democrats have continually raised these and other failings of the Highways operation and we have been met with denial and lack of action from the Conservatives.
She also mentions the run down Stevenage town centre, but the lack of regeneration is a complex matter involving the economic climate, changes in shopping habits, insufficient interest from investors and the fact that most of it is not owned by Stevenage Borough Council (SBC) – since Thatcher (a Conservative) saw fit to sell it off to private companies in 1980. Despite many vague promises, the town’s Conservative MP has not come up with any meaningful ideas or finance. By contrast, the failure of Labour dominated SBC has been to announce in recent years at least four different grandiose schemes for the town centre, before any of it was anchored in real available investment.
