Stevenage Liberal Democrats would like to make the following statement regarding the suspension of Matthew Clarke, Conservative Candidate for Manor Ward in the 2018 Stevenage Borough Council elections. On behalf of;

Stephen Booth, Agent for Liberal Democrat candidates

Cllr. Andy McGuinness, Liberal Democrat borough councillor for Manor Ward and candidate for Manor Ward

Cllr. Robin Parker C.C., Liberal Democrat Chells Division county councillor, Manor Ward borough councillor and SBC Liberal Democrat group leader

Cllr. Graham Snell, Liberal Democrat borough councillor for Manor Ward

Jill Brinkworth, Liberal Democrat candidate in neighbouring Martins Wood Ward

Tom Wren, Liberal Democrat candidate in neighbouring Chells Ward

Neil Brinkworth, Liberal Democrat candidate for Woodfield Ward

Mason Humberstone, Liberal Democrat candidate for Old Town Ward

“Stevenage Liberal Democrats are shocked and disgusted by the homophobic views expressed by the Conservative candidate in Manor Ward at these Stevenage Borough Council elections. Although he has now been disowned by the local Tories, we express our revulsion that a candidate with such views could ever have passed through whatever selection procedures the local Tories employ to select their local council candidates.

Now that there is effectively no Conservative candidate in Manor Ward at these elections, we call upon all the decent and moderate residents in Manor, some of whom may have Conservative leanings, to support our incumbent councillor Andy McGuinness, who is standing for re-election on his superb record of service to the people in Manor”
